What is submasseteric abscess?
Submasseteric abscess is a rare abscess which is often misdiagnosed as a parotid abscess or parotitis. Only a few cases have been reported. The cause is mostly dental in origin. Intravenous antibiotics often fail to alleviate the symptoms as this is a closed space and needs prompt drainage.
Where is the Submasseteric space?
The submasseteric space is between the masseter and the mandible. The submasseterric space (also termed the masseteric space) is a fascial space of the head and neck (sometimes also termed fascial spaces or tissue spaces). It is a potential space in the face over the angle of the jaw, and is paired on each side.
Can masseter muscle get infected?
Submasseteric abscess is a localized, often chronic, infection between the masseter and the mandible. This location is normally only a potential space but provides a protected space for the development of an occult abscess.
What is buccal space infection?
Buccal space infections – These arise primarily from mandibular or maxillary bicuspid or molar teeth, the apices of which lie outside of the buccinator muscle attachments. They are readily diagnosed because of marked cheek swelling but with minimal trismus or systemic symptoms (see Figure 4).
How do you drain a deep temporal space infection?
Usually, infections of the temporal space are drained via temporal approach within the hairline making a 45 degree angle to the zygomatic arch.
How do you drain Masseteric space?
The abscess is drained via a horizontal incision 2.0 to 2.5 cm below the lower border of the mandible. A subplatysmal flap is raised and the masseter muscle is breached to expose the abscess through the pterygomasseteric sling13. Drainage will be performed under local or general anesthesia.
How do you treat buccal space infection?
Broad-spectrum parenteral antibiotic therapy, oral analgesics, and dental or oral surgical consultation for endodontic therapy, abscess drainage, and possibly dental extraction are indicated.
