An excellent visit, we were fortunate in having lovely weather and the monkeys (Barbary macaques) were out and about in some quantity. Good to be able to watch wildlife in close-up without barriers and fascinating to observe the behaviour of a species so close to our own..
Is Trentham Monkey Forest ethical?
The place is a conservation project, and I believe they return some monkeys to the wild. Academic studies are conducted there, too. It’s nothing like a zoo, and the monkeys roam free, but the staff discourage them, gently, from approaching visitors (and visitors must not approach closer than 1 metre from monkeys).
Can you take dogs to the Monkey Forest?
Can I bring my dog? No, dogs are natural predators of the Barbary macaque and are not allowed. However, if you have a guide dog we are happy to keep the guide dog in the onsite office whilst you enjoy the forest.
