How does a flexible impeller work?
The flexible impeller pump working principle consists of a rotating rubber impeller with supple vanes attached that maintain contact with the pump inner walls. As the casing is actually smaller than the vanes, they must bend and then straighten as the impeller turns to conform to shape of the pump internal walls.
Can a flexible impeller pump run dry?
A flexible impeller pump is self-priming from dry up to 3M. Flexible impeller pumps should not be run dry, but in order to help with priming on start-up during first use, ideally both inlet and outlet ports should be filled with fluid to lubricate the impeller and assist with priming.
What are flexible impeller pumps used for?
Flexible Impeller Pumps are ideal for handling shear-sensitive viscous products, as well as those with solids in suspension. The pumps can handle up to 50’000 cPs and the solids passage capability is up to 25mm, but please check this on our product pages for the specific maximum solid sizes.
What is the advantage of flexible when you pump?
The main advantages of flexible impeller pumps are that they are self-priming, relatively low in cost, and they can handle all kinds of fluids, including those containing solids, without causing any damage.
What are impellers made of?
Types of impellers Some are made with plastic impellers while others have metal. The impellers manufactured in DOLZ are made from injected plastic, cast iron or aluminum passivated depending on the original OEM design.
What are the types of impellers?
Pump Impellers – The Types & Their Impact
- Open impeller. As its name suggests, an open impeller has vanes that are open on both sides without any protective shroud.
- Semi-open impeller.
- Closed impeller.
- Vortex impeller.
- Cutter impeller.
Are flexible impeller pumps self-priming?
Flexible Impeller Pumps are Self-Priming These pumps can self-prime up to 6m from dry which allows Impeller Pumps to be used for emptying of sumps, tanks, drums, and IBCs.
What is likely to happen to a flexible impeller pump if it is run whilst dry?
Since the head is cooled by the liquid it is pumping, running the pump dry won’t give the impeller a chance to cool down, and it will cause the impeller to break down.
In which direction does the impeller rotate?
Check the casing for indication of rotational direction. In most cases, when looking at the impeller from the coupling side, the shaft turns clockwise. If the bump test results in the opposite, switch two of the three wires, then run the test again.
