How thick should stair underlay be?
We recommend going no thicker than 11mm for the stairs as anything over this will be very difficult to fit – read our guide on how to fit stairs carpet for more info. 9mm is the optimum thickness, however it can depend on the density of the underlay.

In general, the thickness for carpet padding shouldn’t be more than ½”. Most carpets do best with a 7/16″ pad.
How do you calculate underlay size?
Our underlay rolls cover 15.07 square metres; simply multiply your length by your width (to get the total square meters), and divide it by 15.07 and you will know how many rolls of underlay you will need.

As a rule, we suggest buying as much or more than you need. If your room is about 350 square feet, you will probably want to buy four rolls of 100 square foot underlayment. Most underlayment is sold in packages that cover 100 square feet, so the math is easy.
What is the width of underlay?
Another consideration is the thickness to choose, foam underlay being generally available in 7mm up to 12mm thicknesses. A 7mm standard quality foam underlay would be considered a budget price option, whereas a high density 8mm to 12mm would be regarded as a good option to give great support to your new carpet.
