Old Jindabyne was flooded when the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority harnessed the waters of the Snowy River, as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The scheme began the planning phase in the 1940s so it came as no surprise to locals that new construction was banned in the old township in late 1956.
