What is an Eminectomy TMJ?
The eminectomy procedure is an attempt at restoring normal joint function without reducing mobility of the joint. We have presented two cases of chronic dislocation of the mandible that were treated successfully by removal of the articular tubercle and the lateral portion of the temporal bone.
What is the articular eminence?
The articular eminence is a part of the temporal bone on which the condylar process slides during mandibular movements. The inclination of articular eminence varies among people and it dictates the path of condylar movement as well as the degree of rotation of the disc over the condyle. 1,2.
How do you dislocate a TMJ?
A dislocated jaw is occasionally caused by an injury but is typically caused by opening the mouth excessively wide (such as during yawning, biting into a large sandwich, vomiting, or during a dental procedure).
What can I expect after TMJ surgery?
In terms of recovery time, initial jaw healing typically takes around six weeks after surgery, but it will take more than a month before you can resume regular activity. Patients should plan a three to four week absence from work and complete healing can take up to twelve weeks.
What is TMJ ankylosis?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is a pathologic condition where the mandible is fused to the fossa by bony or fibrotic tissues. This interferes with mastication, speech, oral hygiene, and normal life activities, and can be potentially life threatening when struggling to acquire an airway in an emergency.
What does the articular cavity do?
Articular cartilage is a thin layer of specialized connective tissue with unique viscoelastic properties. Its principal function is to provide a smooth, lubricated surface for low friction articulation and to facilitate the transmission of loads to the underlying subchondral bone.
What if TMJ is untreated?
Although not life threatening, if TMJ disorder is left untreated, it can contribute to significant discomfort and tension. Chronic pain can even lead to the development of diseases like anxiety and depression.
Is your jaw wired shut after TMJ surgery?
Your jaws will be wired together approximately six to eight weeks. This is the time it takes for the bones to heal in a good, strong union.
