What is Levsin for?
Hyoscyamine is used to treat a variety of stomach/intestinal problems such as cramps and irritable bowel syndrome. It is also used to treat other conditions such as bladder and bowel control problems, cramping pain caused by kidney stones and gallstones, and Parkinson’s disease.
What are the contraindications of Levsin?

- overactive thyroid gland.
- autonomic neuropathy.
- myasthenia gravis, a skeletal muscle disorder.
- glaucoma, an increased pressure in the eye.
- high blood pressure.
- coronary artery disease.
- abnormal heart rhythm.
- chronic heart failure.
How do you administer Levsin?
The usual initial dose is 1—2 mg IM or IV, preferably IV. Additional 1 mg doses may be administered IM or IV every 3—10 minutes until muscarinic signs and symptoms subside; repeat dose if signs and symptoms reappear. Up to 25 mg may be required during the first 24 hours of therapy.
How often can Levsin be given?
Adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older: 1 to 2 tablets every four hours or as needed. Do not exceed 12 tablets in 24 hours.
Does Levsin work immediately?
6. Response and effectiveness. Hyoscyamine works quickly, particularly the sublingual or disintegrating tablets which work within a few minutes. Effects last for six-to-eight hours (immediate-release formulations) or twelve hours (extended-release formulations).
Is Levsin a barbiturate?
Both Levsin and Donnatal contain belladonna alkaloids, and Donnatal also contains a barbiturate sedative.
Can you take Levsin every day?
Adults and children age 12 or older: Take 1 to 2 tablets by mouth every 4 hours or as needed. Do not take more than 12 tablets in 24 hours. Children ages 2 to 11 years: Take ½ to 1 tablet by mouth every 4 hours or as needed. Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours.
Why is Levsin sublingual?
Levsin®/SL (hyoscyamine sulfate tablets) is absorbed totally and completely by sublingual administration as well as oral administration. Once absorbed, Levsin®/SL (hyoscyamine sulfate tablets) disappears rapidly from the blood and is distributed throughout the entire body.
Can I take Levsin after eating?
Take this medication by mouth as prescribed, usually 30-60 minutes before meals, or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed without consulting your doctor.
Is Levsin a phenobarbital?
Levsin (hyoscyamine) and Donnatal (belladonna alkaloids, phenobarbital) are used to treat different stomach and intestinal disorders, including peptic ulcer and irritable bowel syndrome. Levsin is also used to control muscle spasms in the bladder, kidneys, or digestive tract, and to reduce stomach acid.
Can you swallow sublingual Levsin?
How to use LEVSIN-SL Tablet, Sublingual. Place this medication under the tongue and allow it to dissolve. This medication may also be swallowed whole or chewed. It may be taken with or without meals.
